New ISO Certifications support systematic development

Outokummun Metalli was awarded the ISO 45001 certification for occupational health and safety management at the beginning of 2025. Our company has long been active in developing workplace safety—for example, a safety observation reporting system was introduced as early as 2010. This system has enabled us to take more effective preventive measures and thereby reduce the frequency of workplace accidents. The newly certified system now supports the systematic development of both workplace safety and employee well-being.

At the same time, we also achieved certification for the ISO 14001 environmental management system. This system helps us identify, monitor, and manage the environmental impact of our operations. For instance, waste sorting and recycling have been improved as part of the environmental system’s implementation.

Our company has held an ISO 9001 quality management certificate and a welding-specific ISO 3834-2 certificate since 2010. Together, the certifications related to environmental management, occupational safety, and quality form an integrated framework that supports the systematic management and development of our operations. We extend our thanks to EHSQ Manager Jari Korpelainen and everyone else involved in the development of these systems for their long-term commitment to quality work!

Energy solutions have reduced emissions

As part of our commitment to responsible production, we converted the heating of our painting line oven from liquefied petroleum gas to electricity in December 2024. Since early 2023, we have used electricity generated by hydropower—green electricity. Our facilities are heated by our own biomass heating plant. The auxiliary heating system uses oil, and in 2024, we switched to HVO renewable fuel oil in that system. These changes have significantly reduced the CO₂ emissions caused by the factory’s energy consumption in recent years, and emissions will continue to decrease in 2025 due to the discontinuation of LPG and the adoption of HVO oil.

We calculated Outokummun Metalli’s carbon dioxide emissions for the first time using 2022 data, at which point the total direct and purchased energy emissions (scope 1 and 2) were 919 tCO₂e. In 2024, the corresponding figure was 124 tCO₂e—a reduction of approximately 86.5% between 2022 and 2024. We continue our development efforts with the support of our sustainability program and the ISO 14001 environmental management system.
