Environmental sustainability

Since the beginning of 2023, we have used green electricity produced with hydropower. Our facilities are heated with our own biomass heating plant. The backup heating system runs on oil, and in 2024 we switched to using HVO renewable fuel oil in that system. That same year, we commissioned an energy efficiency assessment of our factory premises. Based on its findings and recommendations, we implemented several measures to reduce our facility’s energy consumption in the coming years. At the start of 2025, we transitioned the paint line oven from LPG to electric heating. These changes have significantly reduced the factory’s energy-related CO₂ emissions.

As part of our environmental sustainability efforts, Outokummun Metalli’s environmental management system was certified according to the ISO 14001 standard in early 2025. The system supports the identification, monitoring, and control of our environmental impact. For example, waste sorting and recycling, as well as material efficiency, have improved as a result.

We have calculated the carbon footprint (scope 1 and 2) of our Sysmäjärvi factory operations since 2022:
2022: 919 tCO₂e
2023: 147 tCO₂e (–84.0%)
2024: 124 tCO₂e (–15.6%)

Emissions intensity, i.e. carbon footprint relative to revenue, was 6.54 tCO₂e per million euros in 2024. We will continue our sustainability efforts supported by our sustainability program and ISO 14001-certified environmental management system.

Sustainability work at Outokummun Metalli

In 2023, we decided to integrate the development of ESG themes (environmental, social, governance) more systematically into our company’s daily operations. We have identified key focus areas and are developing a sustainability program with clear targets and reporting practices. While Outokummun Metalli is not subject to official reporting requirements (such as the EU’s CSRD directive), we are committed to advancing our sustainability efforts proactively.
