Environmental sustainability

We have calculated the carbon footprint of our Outokumpu factory (scope 1 and 2) based on data from 2022 and 2023. For a long time, we have generated most of our thermal energy from our own heating plant using wood chips. Based on the data from our calculations, we switched to using electricity generated from renewable energy in 2023 (100% hydro power). We also decided to use bio-oil in our building’s backup heating system and are exploring carbon-neutral or lower-emission alternatives to other fossil fuels still used in our operations.

In 2023, Outokummun Metalli’s carbon footprint (scope 1 and 2) was 147.09 tCO₂e, representing a 19% decrease from the previous year. The emission intensity, or carbon footprint relative to revenue, was 7.25 tCO₂e / million €. In 2024-2025, we will continue calculating categories under scope 3.

Carbon footprint

147,09 tCO²e

Emission intensity

7,25 tCO²e /milj.€

In 2024, we conducted an energy efficiency study at our factory premises. Based on the findings and recommendations in the report, we will implement several measures to reduce the energy consumption of our facility in the coming years.

Our standardization work for the implementation of the ISO 14001 environmental management system is currently underway. In this process, we are reviewing waste management and improving recycling practices and material efficiency. Of course, we will also assess all our other environmental impacts in accordance with the standard’s requirements and carry out development measures. Our goal is to achieve ISO 14001 environmental system certification by 2025.

Sustainability work at Outokummun Metalli

In 2023, we decided to integrate the development of ESG themes (environmental, social, governance) more systematically into our company’s daily operations. We have identified key focus areas and are building a sustainability program along with related goals and reporting practices during the years 2024-2025.

The requirements for sustainability reporting are tightening, particularly with the EU:s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. Outokummun Metalli is not subject to official reporting requirements, but we want to proactively develop our sustainability activities. We will also update this website as the ESG program work progresses.
