Markus Kähkönen, Programmer-Machinist
I am Markus Kähkönen, and I have been working at Outokummun Metalli since 2007. Currently, I work as a programmer-machinist, and my duties include programming machining centers, solving machining challenges, and occasionally performing machining tasks. I started my career in the company with finishing tasks performed with manual tools. Over the years, I have worked as a machinist on all the company’s machining centers. One of the most important milestones in my career was participating in the commissioning of two new machining centers, which expanded my professional skills. I have been programming machines for about six years now.
New energy from programming
I graduated as a machinist from Riveria’s Outokumpu unit, and during my studies, I had responsible tasks in internships. This strengthened my interest in the metal industry. Before joining Outokummun Metalli, I worked as a machinist at another company for about a year, but my desire to develop myself pushed me forward. When I expressed interest in programming, the employer gave me the opportunity to move into a new role focusing on machining programming. I learned programming skills on the job, as they were not part of my original training.
I consider Outokummun Metalli to be a safe and reliable workplace where I enjoy working. The company is financially strong, the work atmosphere is positive, and my tasks are interesting.
Continuous learning keeps me on track
I see continuous self-development as important, and I have discussed new training opportunities with my employer. Machines and equipment are evolving rapidly, and it is important to stay updated with these changes.
To those starting their careers, I would suggest taking the initiative to learn. By challenging yourself and boldly taking on new tasks, you won’t get stuck in one role.
Staying active in my free time
In my free time, I stay in shape by going to the gym and jogging regularly. My employer also supports fitness activities, including gym visits.
