Jari Korpelainen, EHSQ Manager
I am Jari Korpelainen, EHSQ Manager at Outokummun Metalli. My role encompasses the company’s environmental, occupational health, safety, and quality matters. The work is meaningful, and no two days are alike. I joined the company in 2007, and my employer has provided me with ample opportunities to advance in my career. Before my current role, I worked as a Quality and Safety Manager, Welding Shop Supervisor, and Production Engineer.
Mastering industrial environments and certifications
My career began at Finnminerals in maintenance operations at the Vuonos talc factory and concentrator. When operations were outsourced, I transitioned to ABB, where I served for several years as a maintenance buyer and supervisor at the Vuonos and Luikonlahti facilities. This experience has given me a solid background in both the metals and mining industries, and I have always enjoyed industrial environments.
I have invested in diverse education. I graduated as an industrial mechanic from a vocational school in 1983. Later, I became a welding technology technician and an assistant mechanical engineer. In 2013, I completed a degree in mechanical and production engineering. I am a good example of how work and studies can be successfully combined, proving that education doesn’t have to follow immediately after basic schooling.
Balancing a day job with sports massage
In 1989, I trained as a sports masseur. Alongside my industrial career, I’ve worked part-time in sports massage, which has offered a great counterbalance to my day job. My active involvement in wrestling, running, and fitness sports complements this work, allowing me to deepen my understanding of people.
In my roles, communication, leadership, and close client collaboration have been paramount. Being firm and providing clear reasoning is particularly important in safety matters. I value the open and conversational culture in our workplace, where differing opinions are handled constructively. Patience is also vital, especially in development work.
